Exposure

Exposure is related to the amount of light being used for creating the photograph. The amount of light can change the whole essence of the photograph. Proper use of it may reveal intricate details of the subject, whereas it can also darken the subject to such an extent that it will be difficult to understand the inter-relation between the elements of the photograph.

How exposure can be controlled?

Exposure can be controlled mainly by the following three factors:

  • Aperture Setting
  • Shutter Speed Setting
  • ISO Setting
What if the exposure is wrong during taking the photograph?

If the exposure is not controlled or adjusted, it may result in the following:

  • Over-exposed image: The amount of light actually used to create the photograph is more than what is required for it. This kind of over-exposed image will contain blown out areas or the highlighted portions which have lost the details it actually may have contained.
  • Under-exposed image: The amount of light actually used to create the photograph is less than what is required for it. This kind of under-exposed image will contain dark or black sections which have lost the details it actually may have contained.

Once a photograph is already taken, photo editing softwares or some manipulation during printing may help the photographer to restore the details to some extent. But it is always better to control the exposure during taking the photograph to get the best result.
